Crime victims denied justice, Columbus police and prosecutors discriminate in cases of violence against men

Systemic discrimination and misconduct within Columbus Division of Police, police reports lie and omit critical information; prosecutors fail to protect LGBTQ+ community from violent crimes

A STRONG CITY’s most recent advocacy campaign focuses on a 2021 crime spree by a criminally insane man who was allowed to terrorize his same-sex intimate partner by the Columbus, Ohio, Division of Police.

In what is obviously a matter of unlawful discrimination in crimes perpetrated against a gay man, CPD failed and continues refusing to prosecute dozens of major crimes, including brutally violent felonies such as attempted murder, kidnapping, sexual assault, forcible robbery, theft, fraud and much more.

CPD passes the buck to the Columbus City Attorney’s office and, worse, refused to prosecute the sexual assault (for example) claiming there is not enough evidence.

The truthful testimony of a victim of violent crime would be more than enough to charge and convict a criminal defendant in any court. In this case, the victim and testimony is that of an Ordained Minister. Police would not hesitate to file charges in such heinous crimes if the victim were a female reporting her male attacker.

Police reports are rife with critical omissions and outright lies. In one of the many incidents reported to police — there were times police never even responded to calls requesting emergency assistance — a CPD report stated the victim refused medical attention when he was transported to a nearby hospital by Columbus Fire medics. That evidence was provided to CPD Det. Robert Tharp investigating one of the sexual assault, but the report was never corrected. Tharp refused to investigate or refer any of the other major crimes occurring in conjunction with the assault.

The Franklin County Prosecutor dropped the only felony prosecution undertaken in the crime spree while the highly traumatized victim was under medical care and subsequently passed the buck right back to CPD. Prosecutors refuse to act to protect the victim and public from this murderous man, who attempted to carry out exactly that amid damning evidence including recorded voicemail messages clearly indicating his intent to kill the victim.

During another incident, the perpetrator, 33-year-old William Jamar Erby of Columbus, Ohio, chased the victim along public roadways and into the parking lot of a (fortunately closed) commercial shopping center. Erby then used his car to prevent the victim’s escape by pinning the vehicle to a parked security truck. After screaming at the victim maniacally, Erby retrieved an object from the trunk of his car and wielded it as a deadly weapon at the victim’s head. Only the windshield of the victim’s vehicle prevented the murder.

Police categorized the deadly attack, endangering all motorists, as criminal damaging because the windshield was destroyed. They could not care less about the danger to life, limb, and the community. No criminal charges whatsoever were filed in the incident and Erby remained at large to continue his life-threatening terrorism.

A STRONG CITY has posted the video of Erby’s insane tirade just moments before exiting his vehicle and attempting the murder on its Instagram feed, along with other evidence of the crime spree which has been substantially disregarded by law enforcement.
